James Gunn Is Writing Another Unannounced Movie
May 17, 2025
James Gunn
has made it clear in the past that just because he announced a huge sweeping wave of DCU
projects when he and Peter Safran took the reins at DC Studios, it doesn’t mean things will pan out that way. Although the initial slate of the “Gods & Monsters” chapter of the new DCU seemed pretty comprehensive at the time, it looks like yet another shift is coming, as the Superman director has revealed he is currently working on another previously unannounced addition to the list.
So far, the new DCU consists of the animated series Creature Commandos, and this summer’s Superman, both of which came from the pen of Gunn. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently in production and set for release in 2026, and Peacemaker Season 2 – again from Gunn (spotting a theme anyone?) – recently released its first trailer. Where things go from there is still something that appears to be in flux, and no project is really certain until cameras roll.

Warner Bros Boss Explains ‘Superman’s Many Influences & How James Gunn Has “Crushed It”
This summer’s ‘Superman’ is bringing a lot of different influences to the table.
Now Gunn has confirmed that he is working on his next script, which will be another new movie and not one of the several that are still awaiting updates. Replying to a question about whether he was working on his next movie, Gunn said:
“Pre-writing. Tooling around. I’m deep in finishing Superman and Peacemaker.”
When questioned further on whether this was a previously announced movie, Gunn simply said, “New.”
This Summer Will Reveal How the DCU Can Compete at the Box Office
Warner Bros.
Superman has a lot riding on it this summer, and it has a lot of competition for box office attention. Many movies released in the final years of the DCEU ended up being a complete disappointment, in both reviews and ticket receipts. Now, James Gunn and Peter Safran have the job of avoiding the pitfalls of the past and making the DC franchise a box office success again.
However, the Man of Steel will have his work cut out for him in a busy summer of big blockbuster movies. Releasing on July 11, Superman will be flanked by Jurassic World Rebirth on July 2 and The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25.
The latest addition to the Jurassic franchise, arriving a week before Superman, will give the movie its biggest challenge. The dino saga has consistently delivered over $1 billion grosses, so will be expected to still be pulling in large crowds on its second weekend when the first DCU live-action project lands in theaters. However, it will have two clear weeks to make as much of an impact as possible before the highly anticipated MCU movie comes and takes over the box office.
Superman fans have already been giving mixed reactions to the trailers released so far, and several rumors about the way Gunn’s movie plays out are causing additional friction, whether they are true or not. With only two months until Superman flies into cinemas again with a fresh face and a new franchise to lead, we don’t have long to wait to see if Gunn’s Midas touch can work its magic on another comic book franchise.
